Ever since Apple introduced the iPhone 11 Pro last year, it"s been making tremendous improvements to its camera system. But while it"s made great strides in low-light performance, videography, and more, Apple just hasn"t taken lossless zoom as seriously as its competitors, mostly offering the secondary 2x zoom like it has since the iPhone 7 Plus, although this year"s iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 2.5x zoom lens.
Competitors like Huawei have driven the market when it comes to lossless zoom, introducing a 5x zoom lens in the P30 Pro and a 10x zoom lens in the P40 Pro+. As we first learned about back in July thanks to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is finally set to start taking lossless zoom seriously in 2022 with a 10x periscope zoom lens.
Now, Korean website The Elec is also confirming this. While it"s nothing groundbreaking since we"ve heard the rumor before, it"s still good news for iPhone fans. As mentioned earlier, Apple has made tremendous improvements to its cameras over the last couple of generations, and the one thing that always seems to be lacking is serious lossless zoom chops.
Of course, the Cupertino firm will have to struggle with low-light performance, something that all companies have to deal with. The higher a resolution you fit into the smaller field-of-view, the more noise tends to be an issue, and the smaller the lens tends to be, letting in less light. Of course, there are ways to use the other lenses to work around this. According to every rumor so far, this should show up in 2022, so we"ll find out more then.
