At E3 this year, EA unveiled Anthem as a brand new action RPG that is being developed by its veteran studio, BioWare. The game will have players taking the role of Freelancers, jetpack-equipped exosuit wearing explorers who venture out onto the game"s hostile landscape in groups. Many deem the game to be EA"s answer to Destiny.
However, there may be some trouble brewing with the game"s development, as Anthem"s lead animator, Steven Gilmour, seems to have left the studio according to his LinkedIn profile page. A user on the Anthem subreddit discovered the departure, which had gone unnoticed until now.
A comment by BioWare employee Bryan Johnson (BioAdmiralX) on the Reddit thread also confirmed Gilmour"s exit news to be true. Johnson said that while Gilmour"s exit saddens the studio, "no company is without turnover." He added that a large number of BioWare"s core group of developers are still with the company and asked fans not to overly worry about the departures:
Lets take KotOR (came out in 2003) as an example, if you look at the credits under Core Game Design (which was literally the first list in the credits) we have the following: David Falkner, Steven Gilmour, Casey Hudson, Drew Karpyshyn, James Ohlen, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts.
The only person in that list that is gone is Steve, with Drew and Casey leaving and coming back. So I know it"s easy to look for any details to determine what is going on when there is little news, but I would say don"t read into departures too much.
Gilmour had been a part of BioWare since 2000, working as an animator on games such as Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, the Mass Effect trilogy, and the Dragon Age series, before his final stint at the studio as Anthem"s project lead animator.
If Anthem sticks to its original late 2018 release window, the game still has quite some time to go before we can get our hands on it. Hopefully, Gilmour"s exit won"t doom the game to have a repeat of what happened to the animations of Mass Effect: Andromeda.
