EA unveiled Anthem at E3 last year, a brand new RPG by BioWare that promised a vast open world, Iron Man-esque exosuits to wear, and certainly looked like it would be arriving as a rival to Activision"s Destiny series.
While not much information regarding the project has surfaced following its E3 debut, EA has now confirmed that the original 2018 release date will not be met. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, EA"s Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen stated that Anthem will now launch in early 2019, but denied recent rumors of the project development lagging behind, saying "People are trying to create a story."
The new release window was reiterated by EA while in a call with investors today, stating "Excitement for Anthem is building, and we’re deeply invested in delivering a great new experience with this game when it launches in Q4 FY19."
Per the report, a new Battlefield entry will launch in 2018 instead, however, no details regarding the game was revealed. It will be interesting to see where that franchise will go following the massive success of Battlefield 1, which now has more than 25 million unique players according to EA.
As to why EA pushed back Anthem instead of launching both games around the same time, the publisher reportedly said the game would garner more attention if it launched in a quieter quarter. EA perhaps wants to avoid another Titanfall 2 launch situation, which released between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, leading to lackluster sales albeit receiving acclaim.
Whatever the reason, RPG fans now have a longer wait than before ahead of them until they can get their hands on the BioWare title.
