AO HELL? Customer bombarded with auto-responders on mobile

Thanks Wes for this one. AOL Instant Messenger announced a service sending instant messages to cell phones via SMS. I signed up for the service and enjoyed it for a few days, however I just came across this gaping bug in it: My friend sent me a message right before she got offline. AIM to her responded with the auto-response saying that the message was forwarded to my cell phone. That response went to her cell phone, since she got offline after sending me the message. Naturally, AIM responded to my cell phone saying that my auto-response was forwarded to her phone...which made AIM respond back to her phone saying her auto-response was forward to my phone. Pretty much an infinite loop...

Thankfully, I was able to sign on so no more messages were forwarded to my phone, but who knows how many were sent? I kept receiving them over and over again on my phone because so many were sent (I could only receive one every 2 seconds or so). Luckily, I got on the phone with Verizon and they were able to stop it.

I don"t know if that necessarily news, but somehow AOL needs to be made aware of the bug. Neowin will be forwarding this news item to the feedback form

I personally don"t use AOL or AIM so what are your experiences? The above is an unconfirmed report, please leave comments. More info on AIM wireless can be found here @ IMonTheRun.com website
