App Store subscription codes rolling out later this year

Apple has announced a new type of App Store offer that will provide discounts or free offers to subscribers with auto-renewable app subscriptions. The subscription offer codes will be made accessible to developers later this year.

The tech giant says the new offer type is meant to help developers capture or win back old subscribers. These "unique, alphanumeric codes" can be distributed online or offline, including through physical events or email blast. Apple says offer codes can also "give existing subscribers opportunities to upgrade or "crossgrade" to a new subscription within the same subscription group."

These one-time codes can be redeemed by new, existing, and previous subscribers on the App Store, via a one-time redemption URL, or within an app, provided they"re on iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 and later. In addition, availability of these offer codes will depend on customer eligibility set by developers.

However, there"s a limit to code redemption: customers can redeem only one code per offer, although 10 active offers will be available per subscription. Developers can also create up to 150,000 codes for every app per quarter. For subscribers, offer codes will be redeemable only within six months from when they"re created, after which the codes will expire.
