Apple finally joined the wireless charging bandwagon with its latest iPhone offerings. Now, the company has purchased a New Zealand-based firm, PowerbyProxi, that designs wireless charging devices for consumers and businesses. The details of this deal remain scarce but, by the looks of it, the Cupertino firm is getting serious about its investment in the wireless technology.
It was in 2007 when PowerbyProxi was spun-out of the University of Auckland, and since then the company has developed products for the average consumers as well as for industries looking to power heavy machinery and medical equipment. The Proxi-Point 150W can support, as its name suggests, transferring up to 150 watts through any non-metallic material; this expertise could allow Apple to increase the scope of its upcoming wireless charging pad, the AirPower, which is expected to be able to charge multiple devices at once. The Auckland firm"s portfolio also consists of 450 patents, patent applications, and pending patents.
Apple"s competitors have had wireless charging for years before the company set foot in the door, but with the advent of the new generation iPhones, perhaps, Apple intends to take it to the next level. Earlier this year, the firm joined Wireless Power Consortium indicating its acceptance of the tech.
