Apple is rolling out a Covid-19 section within the Apple News app to help people get reliable updates about the spread of the disease. The new section pulls in news from reliable sources such as CNN, The Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times to ensure that information is accurate. It comes at a time when social media platforms and tech firms as a whole attempt to stop fake information from circulating.
Some of the most useful tools that have sprung up since the outbreak of the disease has been live tracking services that let you see the state of the outbreak around the world, the UK even announced a hyperlocal map to see whether there are cases in your town. For those unsure where to find these tracking tools, Apple is adding graphics, sourced by Johns Hopkins, to give people up-to-date figures on how many cases there are, how many people have died, and how many have recovered.
Aside from news and tracking, the Apple News Spotlight also contains information to help people prepare to fight the spread of the disease. Some of the tips include washing your hands regularly and thoroughly, using disinfectant cleaners to purge surfaces, and advice on how to best prepare for self-quarantining – a measure that will likely be necessary in more countries as the spread accelerates.
This is not the first time that Apple has dedicated a section of its news app to help people find reliable information. People in America can use the app to keep track of the latest news surrounding the 2020 U.S. Presidential Elections too.
