In a press release today, Apple introduced the new iPod touch. The device packs an A10 chipset, the same that"s used in the iPhone 7 series, replacing the A8 that was in the last-generation model. With the new SoC, Apple promises double the performance, 3x better graphics, and support for AR games.
Other than that, the main benefits that the company is boasting have to do with iOS 12. It includes support for Group FaceTime calling, Apple Arcade (coming later this year), and more.
"We’re making the most affordable iOS device even better with performance that is twice as fast as before, Group FaceTime and augmented reality starting at just $199," said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Product Marketing. "The ultra-thin and lightweight design of iPod touch has always made it ideal for enjoying games, music and so much more wherever you go."
It comes with the same 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.2-megapixel front camera that the device has been using for years, and there"s no Touch ID or Face ID. One thing it does have that the iPhone doesn"t is a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The new iPod touch comes in space gray, white, gold, blue, pink and (PRODUCT)RED. It starts at $199 for the 32GB model, it"s $299 for the 128GB model, and there"s a new 256GB model for $399.
