Yesterday, alongside its 9.7-inch iPad Pro, Apple unveiled a new smaller addition to its handset range, the iPhone SE. In many ways, the new device is a smaller version of its 6s and 6s Plus siblings, featuring the same A9 chipset, Touch ID, and the same front and rear cameras as the larger iPhones.
But there was one question - which Apple didn"t answer in its announcement - to which many people were hoping for an answer: does "SE" actually mean anything?
Interesting ideas there - and there are a few more colorful suggestions across social media too - but the answer is quite simple (and no, it"s not "Simple Edition"):
Apple"s Phil Schiller told Jason Cipriani from Fortune that "SE" stands for "Special Edition". It"s not clear what makes the iPhone SE more special than the other iPhones in its range, other than its smaller size - and referring to the smaller device as a "Special Edition" will surely present fresh branding issues if Apple decides to launch a successor to the device next year.
