Apple is making its own "groundbreaking" TV show, Planet of the Apps, which is - as you probably guessed - about apps and developers. But today, the company bought up the exclusive rights to another hugely popular show from CBS.
Carpool Karaoke began as a segment on The Late Late Show with James Corden, in which the British host is joined by celebrities for a ride in his car, as they sing along to some of their favorite tunes. It"s become a massive success - "the biggest viral video hit ever on late-night television", according to Deadline, with over 830 million YouTube views in the last year.
Plans have been in the works to create a spin-off series for some time, and today, it was announced that Apple Music will make the new series of 16 episodes exclusively available to its subscribers in over 100 countries around the world.
While Corden will serve as an executive producer on the new series, he won"t actually host it, but he will continue to host Carpool Karaoke as a "recurring segment" on his late-night CBS TV show. A host for the standalone series on Apple Music will be announced later.
Apple"s Eddy Cue described Carpool Karaoke as "a perfect fit for Apple Music - bringing subscribers exclusive access to their favorite artists and celebrities who come along for the ride."
The deal raises interesting questions about the future of Apple Music, and whether the company intends to significantly expand the range of exclusive material that it offers to its subscribers with further acquisitions of video content.
