Code found in iOS 14 recently suggested that Apple could be working on the rumored iPhone 9, which is expected to be an upgraded version of the iPhone 8. Now, more details from that code have emerged to indicate that a bigger iPhone 9 Plus is also in the works as a successor to the iPhone 8 Plus.
According to evidence in the code discovered by 9to5Mac, the rumored iPhone 9 Plus will have a 5.5-inch display (larger than the 4.7-inch screen on the iPhone 9). It will also reportedly be powered by the A13 Bionic chip, which will be used for its smaller sibling as well.
The report also claims that both phones will come with a solid state Home button like the original iPhone 8 series. The devices will also allegedly make use of Touch ID instead of Face ID and feature Apple Pay’s Express Transit for making payments.
In addition, the upcoming entry-level devices will reportedly be able to scan NFC tags in the background, a capability that’s only available on the iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and iPhone 11 at the moment. There"s no word on how much the iPhone 9 Plus will cost, but it"s expected for a spring unveiling along with its non-Plus version. That said, it remains unclear whether the devices will be called iPhone 9 and 9 Plus as others speculate the handsets could be called the iPhone SE 2.
