Apple might launch two new versions of the Watch this year

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch not one, but two new Watch wearables in the next few months, both offering moderate improvements over the existing models, while sporting the same form factor and design.

Apple’s Watch has seen a moderate share of success since it was launched, though recently, sales have declined significantly. Part of that may be market saturation or lack of a “killer app” on the Watch, but it may also be due to the fact that Apple is expected to announce a new and upgraded version of its wearable. And according to well-connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, there will actually be two devices to look forward to.

According to his note to investors, which was cited by Apple Insider, Apple is planning on launching two models in the next few months. One of these will be a modest upgrade compared to the existing Watch. It will reportedly feature slight tweaks in production to offer better waterproofing, as well as a new processor from TSMC built on a 16nm manufacturing process.

The second device that’s expected is actually a bit more exciting, and this is the wearable that will sport the Apple Watch 2 moniker. According to Kuo, this device will retain the current Watch design, but it will also come with standalone GPS capabilities and a barometer for better positioning. The Watch 2 will also sport a bigger battery to handle the new instruments. That will mean that the Watch 2 won’t be thinner than the existing models.

According to the same report, Apple isn’t expected to change the design or form-factor of its Watch line anytime soon, with next year’s models supposedly sporting the same look as current models on the market.

A word of caution is needed though, as Ming-Chi Kuo has been right many times in the past, but he’s also changed some of his predictions as new information came to light. So take everything here with a pinch of salt, until we learn more of Apple’s Watch plans.
