Apple Music amasses 27 million paid subscribers, Spotify still ahead with over 50 million

Yesterday, Apple held its annual WWDC event in San Jose that shed light on where it was taking its various OSs for its different platforms. The firm also revealed some new additions to its hardware lineup with the 10.5-inch iPad Pro and HomePod speaker. Although its software and hardware announcements were the most exciting, Apple also talked about its growth, and in particular with its streaming music service, Apple Music.

The firm announced that it had amassed 27 million paid subscribers. That is quite impressive considering that only a few months ago, Apple was touting that it had just attained 20 million subscribers. While the growth is occurring at a steady pace, rival Spotify has most recently shared that it was able to eclipse 50 million subscribers. But there is a stark difference between the services since Apple does not offer a free ad-supported tier and must instead rely on converting customers with its three-month free trial.

With the HomePod on the horizon, Apple has made strides to bolster its music streaming service with AirPlay 2 and giving developers more power with its new MusicKit API. Along with Siri integration and leveraging its Apple Music platform, the firm is hoping that the HomePod will become a huge success.
