Apple News expands curated local coverage to D.C., Charlotte and Miami

Apple has announced that Apple News will now offer curated local news for users in Charlotte, Miami and Washington D.C. With the content being curated by Apple, users will get the most interesting local stories presented to them. Some of the publications sourcing local news in these areas include Axios Charlotte, the Charlotte Observer, Eater Miami, the Miami Herald, DCist, Washingtonian, the Washington Post and more.

Commenting on the expansion of its curated local news offering, Lauren Kern, editor-in-chief of Apple News, said:

“At Apple News, we know that access to trusted local news is critical for communities, and an important resource for a national audience as well. We are committed to working with local publishers across the country to support their journalism and offer our users local coverage in the cities and regions they care about.”

With today’s update, Apple News now serves curated local news in eleven cities including New York, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco. Going forward, Apple says it hopes to expand this feature to even more localities around the United States – this should be welcomed by local papers which have probably seen a slump in sales as more people have moved to digital news consumption.

Local news is curated on a weekly basis, on a Thursday, and collected into the Read Local collection. Read Local shows users the best stories from the week from local publications so that they can be better informed about what’s going on in their area.
