One of the biggest criticisms about getting our media online is that people are falling, too easily, into believing fake news articles. Fake news came to the forefront during the U.S. Presidential elections, now Apple wants to combat it during the US Midterms. If you use Apple News, the firm is now curating articles from trusted sources and putting them in a special section of the app.
Explaining the feature and where to find the Midterm section, Apple said:
“The 2018 Midterm Elections section helps readers follow the latest on the elections with breaking news, exclusive highlights and analysis from reliable sources selected by Apple News’ team of experienced editors. Readers can quickly get up to speed on the most relevant topics and candidates by accessing the new section in the Apple News app from a banner across the top of the For You tab, as well as through Top Stories and the Spotlight tab.”
In order to be more that just a curator of Midterms news, Apple has added two sections, The Conversation and On the Ground. The first offers a collection of opinion columns on hot issues, including from sources the user may not already read, Apple said this will offer readers with a full range of ideas. As for On the Ground, this will highlight articles about issues that are important to local constituents.
Aside from those two features, The Washington Post will bring the Election Now dashboard to the app which shows important primary races taking into account current polling, what pundits have to say, and survey data on voter enthusiasm.
Apple has also partnered with Axios to bring analysis about the important developments of the race, and Politico has also been tapped to add its Races to Watch section which looks at a set of races offering up themes and trends.
The feature is now live in the U.S. and will be available until the elections end in November.
