In-display fingerprint sensors started appearing on the security screens of mobile devices since 2018, and the trend even picked up more steam this year among flagship phones and mid-range devices alike. However, Apple"s iPhone lineup has been holding out against adopting this system.
A fresh report now seems to predict when the Cupertino-based tech giant will finally incorporate an in-display fingerprint scanner into its future iPhone models. According to longtime Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the 2021 iPhone series could finally be featuring an on-screen Touch ID system using an ultrasonic technology from Qualcomm.
Kuo made the forecast in a note published earlier today. He also predicted that over the next 12 to 18 months Apple will have been able to make improvements in four critical limitations to the technology, namely "module thickness, sensing area, power consumption, and lamination yield rate."
On the other hand, an earlier forecast predicted the arrival of an under-display Touch ID to occur next year. According to the forecast from Blayne Curtis, an analyst at Barclays, that system would allow users to tap anywhere on the screen to unlock the device.
Reports about Apple incorporating the Touch ID sensor under the display of future iPhones began in as early as 2017 when such information was revealed at a Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company symposium. Of course, this new report should be taken with a pinch of salt until Apple makes a final announcement.
