In a surprising move today, Apple has released the first iOS 13.1 Developer beta. The new build comes nearly a full month before iOS 13 is expected to be released.
Here"s how it typically works. In June at WWDC, Apple announced its next big major updates, and following the keynote, the first Developer beta builds are released. Over the summer, the company releases new builds roughly every two weeks, and they gradually get more stable. In the second week of September, the firm introduces its new iPhones, among other things, and after the event, it releases GM seeds, the final builds of its software updates that production users will get. A day or two later, the first Developer betas of the .1 releases are seeded.
But it would seem that this time, Apple is getting a head start with the iOS 13.1 beta. The .1 update is usually a pretty worthwhile one though, since there is always a small handful of features that just don"t make it into the final major release. Maybe Apple still has some bugs to iron out, or maybe there"s another reason. Either way, beta testers get to check these features out over the summer, and then they"re removed in the GM seed, then reintroduced in the .1 beta.
If you"re on the iOS 13 beta, you"re just going to get iOS 13.1. There"s no new configuration profile to install. The bad news is that without that short GM period, there"s no easy way to get off of the beta train. The only thing you can do right now is uninstall the iOS 13 configuration profile to keep the iOS 13.1 Developer beta from showing up on your device.
Apple also released watchOS 6 Developer beta 9 and tvOS 13 Developer beta 8.
