Apple said to be considering $400 price tag for its iWatch

Earlier this week, Apple sent out invites to a media event on September 9, at which it is expected to launch at least one larger iPhone model and, at long last, its new wearable device. Popularly referred to as the "iWatch", it may well be called  something complete different - indeed, its name is just one of the many things that we still don"t know about the device.

The iWatch - or whatever it"s called - probably won"t look like this concept

Another big question mark hangs over the thorny issue of pricing. While some rival manufacturers have been looking to lower-cost wearables in a bid to stimulate consumer interest in the nascent market segment, it should come as no surprise to hear that Apple apparently has little interest in chasing low-value sales.

As Re/code reports, although the price of the iWatch has not yet been finalized, Apple executives are said to be considering a price tag as high as $400 for the new device, when it goes on sale early next year

Re/code did not disclose the identity of its sources - nor did it give any clue as to where this information has come from - but it does bear the hallmarks of a "controlled leak" from Apple itself. By hinting at a higher-than-expected price for the device, just days before it is officially unveiled, a lower price tag - say, $300 - may well appear more reasonable when announced.

The report also stated that Apple will release multiple models of the device, "including lower priced versions".

Of course, like everything about the device at this stage, this is purely the stuff of speculation - but with just over a week until Apple finally shows off its long-awaited wearable, at least there"s not long to wait until all is revealed.
