Apple starts massive recall of power adapters

Apple has initiated a voluntary recall of AC wall plug adapters in several countries after finding they may break in "very rare cases", exposing users to a risk of electric shock if touched. The recall includes adapters sold between 2003 and 2015 in Continental Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Argentina and Brazil.

The adapters were originally sold with Macs, some iOS devices, and were also included with the Apple World Travel Adapter Kit. Customers can identify if their two-pronged adapters are part of the recall using the image above. Affected adapters, seen to the left, include 4 or 5 characters or no characters on the inside slot where it attaches to an Apple power adapter. Replacement adapters, as seen in the image on the right, instead have a horizontal 3-character region code.

AC wall adapters designed for Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, United Kingdom, and United States, were explicitly not included in the recall. It also does not affect Apple"s USB power adapters.

Apple issued a similar recall in mid-2014, when 5w USB iPhone adapters were recalled in 37 countries. More recently, the company recalled all Beats Pill XL speakers in June 2015 due to a "fire safety risk".

If you own an AC wall plug adapter included in the recall, details on how to obtain a replacement are available at the Apple AC Wall Plug Adapter Exchange Program page.
