Apple was originally set to open paid subscriptions for Podcasts last month after unveiling the service in April. However, the company decided to delay the launch until June in order to make sure it"s "delivering the best experience for creators and listeners."
A new report today claims that Apple has told podcasters the in-app subscriptions will roll out on June 15 globally. For podcasters, the service will allow them to set their own prices in exchange for perks such as ad-free content and exclusive shows. Creators will be charged $19.99 per year so they can offer subscriptions.
As usual, Apple will take its mandatory 30% cut in the first year of your subscription and then 15% in the succeeding years. It"s coming to more than 170 countries and regions, with premium content sitting alongside free offerings in the app.
Prior to the launch, Apple has been readying a number of benefits for creators such as the recent expansion of its affiliate program to podcasts in order to let podcasters earn a 50 percent commission on the first paid month of every subscriber converted. The initial batch of content available at launch will come from Pushkin Industries, QCODE, Tenderfoot TV, NPR, the Los Angeles Times, and The Athletic.
