In June at WWDC, Apple announced the first meaningful upgrade to the Mac Pro since the fundamentally flawed 2013 model was introduced. The new model is completely redesigned, looking more like the previous "cheese grater" model than the 2013 "trashcan" model. It"s meant to have an emphasis on expansion, something that the 2013 model did not have.
You can pre-order the new Mac Pro beginning today, and it starts at $5,999. That will get you a 3.5GHz eight-core Intel Xeon W processor, 32GB DDR4 RAM, an AMD Radeon Pro 580X with 8GB GDDR5, and a 256GB SSD. Obviously, you"ll want to bump up some specs.
There are five CPU options, the top-end of which is a 2.5GHz 28-core Xeon W for $7,000 more. RAM goes anywhere from 32GB to 1.5TB, and maxing that out will cost you an additional $25,000. There are also five GPU options, at the top of which is two AMD Radeon Pro Vega II Duo with 2x32GB HBM2 memory each, for $10,800.
The SSD maxes out at 4TB for an additional $1,400, although there"s an 8TB SSD option coming soon as well. You can get an Apple Afterburner card for an extra $2,000, which should boost PCIe speeds. And finally, you can add wheels for $400. The whole package maxes out at $52,599, although again, there will be an even higher price when that 8TB model comes along.
That"s not all though, because you"ll need a new monitor to go along with the PC that costs more than the down payment for a house. The Pro Display XDR starts at $4,999, although the one with nano-texture glass is $5,999. You"ll need a stand for that monitor, which will run you $999, or you can get the VESA Mount Adapter for $199.
