Ever since Apple introduced the feature with the 12-inch MacBook in 2015, the company"s butterfly keyboards have been pretty much universally hated. Nevertheless, that didn"t stop Apple from introducing the new keyboard mechanism to its other laptop lineups, the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air.
But it seems that Apple is finally ready to give its customers what they want. According to analyst Ming Chi-Kuo, the company will switch to a scissor mechanism in its keyboards with the upcoming 16-inch MacBook Pro. Other sizes of the MacBook Pro, along with the MacBook Air, will retain the butterfly mechanism for this year.
That will change in the 2020 models though, if the report is accurate. All MacBooks will switch over to scissor mechanisms next year, while the iPad will continue using a rubber dome keyboard. Apparently, Apple will still be paying $25-$30 for keyboard components, more than the average $8-$12, according to MacRumors.
Apple"s butterfly keyboards have been prone to having issues, causing keys to stick and break, and more. Apple even has a repair program just for the keyboards that"s included in its MacBooks, and there"s a Change.org petition with over 37,000 signatures calling for Apple to recall MacBook Pros.
