Apple's iOS 11 is poison for battery life, survey of 50,000 shows

The latest iteration of Apple"s mobile operating system doesn"t bode too well for the battery in your iPhone, it seems. After the release of iOS 11, Apple"s forums and social media support pages seem to have been flooded with users reporting a variety of problems they"ve encountered after upgrading.

Alongside a number of other issues such as connection problems, lock screen freezes and app crashes, one of the biggest complaints about the new update is its terrible effect of battery life. According to a survey of 50,000 iOS devices performed by enterprise data management firm Wandera, the decay rate for battery life is abysmal for iOS 11 compared to iOS 10:

From among the surveyed devices on thier network, the company singled out heavy to moderate iOS users and averaged the results for a device to go from 100% charge to 0% over a three day period. The results indicate the rate of decay was only 96 minutes for iOS 11, only 40% of, and a stark difference to, the 240 minutes achieved on iOS 10.

Earlier this week, Apple pushed out the iOS 11.0.1 update but many of the issues still remain. It seems the company will have to push out a much larger update containing a number of optimisations to the OS before its floundering launch can be salvaged.
