Gamesindustry.biz is reporting some fairly big news for all our Mac gamers out there in Neowin land. Aspyr Media has announced that they are developing a digital distribution service for the Macintosh platform. This new service will be available for free to all Mac users, and allow you to purchase, and directly download games and entertainment software titles using your (hopefully) broadband connection.
This new platform is being called "The Gamerhood" service and will include basic features that the PC platform has had for quite awhile. These features include the ability to play games without the CD/DVD media, new content, alerts for updates and content, and online game registration. Gamerhood will also be able to check hardware compatibility directly, and also allow parents to place restrictions on gameplay and even purchasing by comparing ESRB ratings before a purchase is made.
The service is expected to launch sometime in the Fall, but there is no other information available yet. Aspyr will release more information in the coming months, along with a list of games that will be made available at launch.
