Although there were rumors of Ubisoft not releasing an Assassin"s Creed game in 2018, the company revealed Odyssey during E3 with an October release date. Having the capability to launch massive titles like Origins and Odyssey back to back was attributed to two separate development teams working on the games.
However, this will not be the case for 2019, with Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirming to Gamespot that the main series will not have a new entry during that year:
"On Assassin"s, we had a game [in 2018] and we have one this year, but we are not going to have a full-fledged Assassin"s next year. It"s just because the team were working separately, so we have two games now, one year after the other. But next year you"re not going to have a fully fledged one."
The possibility of a smaller title or a spin-off was also squashed. Instead, Guillemot said that the studio will be focusing on post-launch support for Assassin"s Creed Odyssey, saying "The team really want to give, on a regular basis, some new possibilities for play, so when you get [Odyssey] this year, you"re going to get in for a couple of years, actually."
The last time that the long-running series took a break was in 2016, right after Assassin"s Creed Syndicate. The result was Assassin"s Creed Origins, which was regarded as one of the best in the franchise by Neowin"s Muhammad Jarir Kanji in his review. It will be interesting to see what Ubisoft has in store for 2020, maybe even an entry built for the next generation of consoles.
