ASUS today announced its first gaming smartphone, the ROG Phone. The device includes an exclusive version of the Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform, which is clocked at 2.96GHz. On top of that, it comes with 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 2.1 storage.
Naturally, the display comes with a high refresh rate of 90Hz, although that"s less than the Razer Phone"s 120Hz. The AMOLED screen comes in at six inches with an 18:9 aspect ratio, with a 2160x1080 resolution, and it should be sensitive enough to detect input through gloves.
The handset has not just one, but two USB Type-C ports, one of which is placed on the side, so you can game in a landscape orientation while charging. Oddly, both ports have different specs. The one on the bottom is USB 2.0 and supports 20W fast charging, while the one on the side is USB 3.1 Gen 1, but only supports 15W fast charging. ASUS says that the 20W fast charging will get you to 60% of the 4,000mAh battery in 33 minutes, or to 85% in just over an hour.
The ROG Phone also has two AirTriggers on the left side of the device, which require only 20 grams of force to press, giving them "a light tough for quick reflexes". The idea is to keep your fingers off of the screen more, so you can see what"s going on in the game.
ASUS also announced a range of peripherals that plug into the USB Type-C port. There"s a TwinView Dock that allows you to connect to a second screen in a handheld package. And the WiGig Dock uses 60Hz Wi-Fi to connect to a larger display.
ASUS said that the ROG Phone is coming this summer, and didn"t provide pricing information.
