Asus in talks with Microsoft to build its own version of HoloLens

Asus could be interested in making its own version of Microsoft"s HoloLens augmented-reality glasses. The company’s CEO Jonney Shih and Microsoft Vice President of Windows and Devices Terry Myerson, in a recent interview, confirmed that the talks are happening.

Myerson told CNet that it was “up to Shih” to evaluate the technology and start working on a compatible hardware device. "Everything we"re doing in hardware, we do with the mind of how do we grow the Windows ecosystem," he said. "That is why we"re investing to create a category."

Shih said that the Taiwanese conglomerate is “still evaluating” the idea of potentially becoming the first third-party manufacturer to make its own HoloLens headset. Although not fully committing to the project yet, he added, that consumers will have to “wait and see.”

Microsoft has previously stated that it would release the HoloLens developer kit in early 2016. HoloLens, whose capabilities have been showcased at multiple conferences by Microsoft, is slowly starting to gain momentum.

Still in its infant stages, it is understandable that not many companies are lining up to invest their time and money on AR or VR projects. But, Microsoft, Samsung, HTC and Oculus are just some of the companies that are pushing the envelope when it comes to augmented and virtual reality projects.
