ASUS ZenFone 3 Deluxe unveiled; is first to sport the new Snapdragon 821 processor

Leading on from an announcement made at its launch event at Computex 2016, ASUS has upped the ante on its ZenFone 3 Deluxe smartphone.

The originally released specifications indicated that the ASUS ZenFone 3 Deluxe would feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor. However, this was well before Qualcomm announced its successor in the form of the Snapdragon 821 boasting a 10% performance increase over the 820.

What has now become clear is that there will now be three variants of the ZenFone 3 Deluxe differentiated by processor, RAM and storage:

Top tier:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 @ 2.4GHz
  • 6GB DDR4 RAM
  • 256GB UFS 2.0 internal storage

Mid tier:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 @ 2.15GHz
  • 6GB RAM
  • 64GB storage

Bottom tier:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 @ 2.15GHz
  • 4GB RAM
  • 32GB storage

All other specifications remain uniform across all tiers, including the 5.7-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, 23MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, 3000mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 technology, and Adreno 530 GPU. A fingerprint sensor, a feature notably absent from the ASUS ZenFone 2 Deluxe, also joins the baseline features for the latest revision.

In good news for VR fans, all three variants of the ZenFone 3 Deluxe have also been certified for Daydream, Google"s Android-powered VR solution. While a compatible headset accessory has yet to be announced, ASUS still has time up its sleeve given that the smartphone is due for release as early as next month in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

On paper, the flagship ZenFone 3 Deluxe looks to be an absolute beast of a smartphone, particularly when compared to the more demure ZenFone 2 Laser handsets offered by ASUS late last year.
