AT&T has expanded its GigaPower network to cover areas in the Bay Area. AT&T GigaPower is a 100% fibre network which delivers speeds up to 1Gbps. The areas which received the fast speeds include parts of San Francisco, San Jose, Dublin, Mountain View, Santa Clara, and San Ramon.
AT&T said that the new speeds are available now to customers in “tens of thousands of area homes, apartments and small businesses”. The company also said that it plans to nearly triple the availability of the service by the end of 2016.
"By expanding AT&T GigaPower to additional cities in the Bay Area beyond Cupertino, we are demonstrating our continued commitment to our customers whose appetite for high-speed data continues to grow,” said Jeni Bell, vice president and general manager, Northern California and Northern Nevada at AT&T. “As the ways in which we communicate and seek entertainment become more data-intensive, our customers will benefit from our expansion of our AT&T GigaPower service.”
AT&T GigaPower is available at over 1.6 million locations across 22 metro areas with plans to extend to a further 34 more areas, with pricing starting at $70 per month for speeds up to 1Gps. AT&T emphasise that with 1Gbps download speeds, users can download 25 songs in one second, a TV show in three seconds and an HD film in 36 seconds.
Super-fast 1Gbps internet connections have been springing up all over the US. Google, who since 2012, has been delivering Google Fiber to various cities, starting with Kansas, said it was also rolling out its fibre network to San Jose. Unfortunately for Google, while it has been preparing to roll the service out to that city, AT&T has already begun selling its GigaPower service there. It could be one of many places where AT&T beat Google to the punch.
