After reporting that AT&T will charge existing customers $599 for the 16GB iPhone 3GS and $699 for the 32GB, AT&T has responded to numerous complaints with good news. Customers who are eligible for an upgrade (usually after 12-18 months and spend more than $99 a month) will only need to pay $199 (16GB) or $299 (32GB) iPhone 3GS.
Customers who are not eligible for the upgrade and wish not to wait can still upgrade their iPhone, following under AT&T"s "Early Upgrade" policy paying $399 (16GB) or $499 (32GB). Customers with no commitment can purchase the iPhone 3GS for $599 (16GB) or $699 (32GB).
This policy change will be sure to encourage consumers to upgrade to the newest iPhone. Upgrade eligible customers in July, August or September 2009 can benefit from their best pricing, beginning June 18, 2009. These customers who wish to upgrade are asked to come into the AT&T store to upgrade or preorder online June 18, although AT&T may have limited supplies of the iPhone 3GS.
AT&T customers who do not know if they are eligible can check online at www.att.com/iPhone or visit any company owned retail store or call "*NEW#" (*639#) to receive a detailed text message about your upgrade eligibility.
