Attachments disabled on Forums

Some people may of noticed that some posts refer to attachments that are not actually there anymore. After conversations with both the site operator and Redmak we have decided that it is in the best interest of the site to disable the option to upload attachments.

Neowin has a far too heavy server load when it is enabled due to the traffic that comes to Neowin daily. Our attachments are downloaded 100"s of times daily which is causing the SQL+CPU load to choke.

Our database has now been reduced from 316mb (2 days ago) to a more reasonable 75mb. Redmak was in the process of creating a hack for attachments to be uploaded (and read) to a directory. Although after going over the server logs we decided it was time to halt that option.

Tyme has had to babysit our server and reset the cache frequently to keep everything running, we have decided to look for a more viable solution as this of course is not the answer. She has spoken to many people: vbulletin developers and site operators of other large sites (among others) and they all agreed that Neowin should of buckled long ago if it wasn"t due to the amazing server admin we have to keep it all online.

So I want to thank Hosttyme again for their amazing support and hope that our visitors will take time out to realise this is our only option. Please continue to attach images, but now at your own webspace.

We will compile a list of free hosts later for the people that need to know where they can host their desktops etc etc.
