This week we are in Las Vegas to cover CES. But, before the big show begins, AT&T is holding its annual Developer Summit over the next few days. Along with announcing some interesting products, AT&T has also announced carrier support for WebRTC, but specifically Enhanced WebRTC.
If you are unfamiliar with Web Real-Time Communications or WebRTC, it is an API that is embedded within some of the more popular browsers like Opera, Firefox, or Google Chrome. WebRTC currently allows you to communicate browser-to-browser via voice, video, and file sharing.
Although WebRTC allows for new methods of communication, AT&T"s Enhanced WebRTC will take this communication a step further by actually allowing those using a supported browser to communicate directly with mobile and landline numbers. But, perhaps more interesting is that users will be able to transfer a call from a supported browser to a mobile handset seamlessly. Although still in its infancy, this new API could jump-start communication via the web in a brand-new way.
Naturally, we will have to see wait and see how developers harness this API and see what kind of uses it will yield.
