Aviary photo editing company launches Windows 8 SDK

Software developers making Windows 8 apps now have some new tools to use if they are interested in putting in some photo editing features to the mix. Today, Aviary announced it has launched its Windows 8 SDK for those developers. Aviary has previously offered an SDK for Windows Phone 7 app developers along with SDKs for iOS, Android and HTML5 platforms.

The Aviary blog offers up some details on the SDK, stating that it worked with both Microsoft and processor maker AMD on the software. It states:

We’ve achieved significant performance improvements by implementing filters and effects through the new heterogeneous compute language C++ AMP. Computations are performed on the highly parallel graphics processing unit (GPU) cores inside the AMD APU instead of the more serial central processing unit (CPU) cores. Applying CAMP allows for processing of our complete range of filters and effects instantaneously – on average 16x faster than comparable processors, according to benchmark studies conducted by AMD.

The SDK will launch with six third-party app partners that will be adding the Aviary software to their Windows 8 apps this week, including Rowi, Memorylage, Vol8t, MyFrames, Photo Annotater and Selektiv. Aviary has also launched its own free Windows 8 Photo Editor app in the Windows Store.
