Barnes & Noble today unveiled a new price point for its Nook Simple Touch e-reader with GlowLight. Effective immediately, customers can buy the device for just $99. Not only is this the lowest price ever for this model of the Nook, but it"s also the most affordable illuminated e-reader on the market. Amazon"s starting model of the Kindle Paperwhite sells for $119 and that"s with "Special Offers", i.e. ads.
There are a few catches you might want to be aware of though. First, it"s been over a year since Barnes & Noble unveiled this GlowLight e-reader. It"s very possible that the dropped price is only temporary as Barnes & Noble prepares to launch a new model soon. If you like keeping up with the latest technology, don"t get lured in by the low price so quickly. Second, Amazon has a tendency to level the playing field as much as possible. If the Barnes & Noble Nook price drops, don"t be surprised if you see the Kindle miraculously go on sale soon.
It"s also been almost a year since the most recent Nook tablets have been announced, so perhaps Barnes & Noble is aiming to announce new models all at once. The last we"ve heard about those tablets is that the company won"t be manufacturing them anymore and will instead rely on third-party manufacturers to get the job done.
