EA pulled the controversial "pay-to-win" microtransactions system from Star Wars Battlefront II shortly before its launch due to the massive public outcry. And now, four months later, the previously announced revamped version of the progression system is almost here, marking the return of the game"s premium currency, Crystals, but only for purchasing cosmetics.
EA announced today that with the new progression update, Star Cards and items that affect gameplay will no longer arrive via crates. Players will gain skill points when leveling up, which they can then use to unlock or upgrade Star Cards they desire.
Speaking of crates, DICE is ditching the ability to purchase them as well. The new loot boxes will be earned via the daily login bonus as well as through completing milestones and challenges. Instead of Star Cards, the loot boxes will only contain Credits and cosmetic items.
As for the Crystals, players will be able to use this premium currency to purchase new appearances for heroes and troops directly. However, these cosmetic items will also be unlockable using Credits which are earned in-game.
In addition to the progression revamp, EA said that there"s still more to come for Battlefront II:
These changes are a major step as we continue to improve the core of the game and add new content. And there’s a lot more to come. In addition to continued balance patches, we will also add a number of modes to Star Wars Battlefront II in the coming months, offering several standout, brand-new ways to play.
The Star Wars Battlefront II Progression Update is slated to land on all platforms on March 21. We will have to wait and see what sort of a response will this new system garner.
