Founder, Chairman and the most well-known face at Microsoft, Bill Gates was recently a guest on Charlie Rose and said that Microsoft was right to build its own tablet in reference to the latest Surface announcement.
“I actually believe you can have the best of both worlds. You can have a rich eco-system of manufacturers and you can have a few signature devices that show off, wow, what"s the difference between a tablet and a PC?”
Microsoft’s Surface tablets are set to compete with HP, Dell, Lenovo and Asus – four hardware partners who are said to be paying a hefty fee in order to integrate the Windows 8 OS into their tablets.
Gates confirmed that he is happy that Microsoft didn’t go down the route of integrating hardware and software on the same level that Apple did in the past; however, he advocates that Microsoft build more of its own tablets in the future.
Whilst Gates said he’s okay for the company having a one-up over its hardware partners, he also said later that he believes the Windows 8 tablet will kill the traditional PC. “You can get everything you like about a tablet, everything you like in a PC, all in one device. That should change the way people look at things.”
