Just five months after the release of Mass Effect: Andromeda - the fourth major installment in the franchise - BioWare has announced that the game will no longer receive any future updates for single-player or in-game story content.
The studio did mention that it will ensure some of the campaign"s loose narrative threads are addressed, by the use of upcoming comics and novels, noting that:
Early in development, we decided to focus Mass Effect: Andromeda’s story on the Pathfinder, the exploration of the Andromeda galaxy, and the conflict with the Archon. The game was designed to further expand on the Pathfinder’s journey through this new galaxy with story-based APEX multiplayer missions and we will continue to tell stories in the Andromeda Galaxy through our upcoming comics and novels, including the fate of the quarian ark.
This announcement comes a couple of months after sources confirmed that all future DLC for the game has been cancelled. The latest and final update, 1.10, was rolled out near the end of last month, and mainly focused upon fixing in-game issues.
It is important to note that the multiplayer mode will still be updated with new content including missions, character kits, and more. The studio"s multiplayer team will provide further details in the upcoming weeks.
Despite all the anticipation and hype regarding the Mass Effect franchise, Andromeda received a lukewarm response with review scores scattered around the 70/100 mark for different platforms on Metacritic. Perhaps one of the reasons for BioWare"s latest move can also be attributed to the possibility that it is shifting its primary focus towards Anthem, the AAA action role-playing game slated for a release in fall 2018.
