Remember Interplay? The game publisher was once a major force in the PC game industry, but a string of sales failures caused the company to be reduced to a shadow of its former self. Today, it was revealed that Interplay is planning a comeback for one of the truly seminal game development studios.
The company quietly launched a website this week announcing that it was bringing back Black Isle Studios. No other information about the revival has been announced but the teaser site says that the studio will try to make "the world"s best RPGs."
The previous incarnation of Black Isle did indeed make a number of well regarded PC RPGs, including Planescape: Torment and the Icewind Dale series.
That"s the good news. The bad news is that there doesn"t appear to be anybody from the old Black Isle Studios team joining the new group. Many of the original team members have found their way to Obsidian Entertainment, including Chris Avellone. In a Twitter message today, he states, "I know nothing about the Black Isle Studio news announcement, doesn"t involve me or Obsidian... or well, anyone that I know. ;)."
Hopefully we will learn more about this effort, and the people behind it, in the near future.
