Earlier this week, HMD Global - the company now responsible for creating devices under the Nokia brand - announced a range of devices, including a new interpretation of its classic 3310. While the new version is a spiritual successor to the much-loved original, it has been completely redesigned with numerous more modern features.
Gone is the monochromatic display of its predecessor; in its place you"ll find a 2.4-inch color LCD with QVGA resolution. It has (limited) app support too, along with a microSD card slot so that you can load content on to the device to enjoy on the move. And it offers a plentiful 22 hours of talktime, as well as a remarkable one month of standby time.
The new handset is clearly aimed at those with a keen sense of nostalgia, but the response to its launch among attendees at this week"s Mobile World Congress - regardless of age - has appeared overwhelmingly positive. Even those not old enough to remember the original have expressed great interest in the new 3310; every time I"ve visited or walked past the Nokia stand at MWC this week, it"s had huge crowds of people swarming around, desperate to get their hands on the new phone.
As I briefly touch on in the video below, the new Nokia 3310 clearly isn"t perfect - its navigation buttons are surprisingly difficult to use - but I have to admit that I"m slightly smitten by the device. That said, when the nostalgia wears off, and I get the chance to actually use the 3310 in the real world, I wonder if I"ll still be quite so forgiving of its weaknesses.
