Blizzard outlines planned updates for Overwatch in 2017 and recaps a successful year

With Overwatch launching to great success earlier this year, as well as taking top honors at the 2016 Game Awards, it"s fair to say that Blizzard has had a great year. With the game now boasting over 20 million users globally, the company has now revealed its plans for the title in 2017.

Overwatch’s director Jeff Kaplan has done a recap of some of the things Blizzard has done for the game in 2016, as well as outlined what they plan to do in 2017. In the 12-minute video below, Kaplan has revealed that more heroes, new maps, new game modes, as well as tweaks to existing characters are planned for release next year. He also said that Blizzard is working on a ton of “fun” prototypes and he hopes that gamers will be able to see it for themselves in 2017.

However, given that they are just prototypes, it"s unclear how much of it will make the final cut. Kaplan also talks about the broadcasting community and revealed that Blizzard will be improving on the spectator mode in the game that will help improve the pro tournament scene. Given that Blizzard’s interest in eSports isn’t exactly a secret, this should come as good news for those who follow tournaments.

Last but not least, Kaplan announced plans to introduce a server browser where gamers can search for custom games which allows players to decide the rules of the games. This feature is expected to debut in early 2017. In any case, you can check out Kaplan’s recap of 2016 in the video above.
