Borderlands 3 gameplay reveal starts in familiar terrain, ends in absurd guns

Gearbox Software today unveiled Borderlands 3"s gameplay to the world with an almost hour-long session, and it had more bizarre guns than we could count, as expected from the series. Head to the 1:03:00 mark in the video above for the gameplay demo.

For instance, the guns from the disposable weapons manufacturer Tediore don"t just explode when thrown away, they now grow legs and become mini-turrets that chase goons, or spout homing missiles, among other absurd transformations. In addition to guns with ludicrous powers, some weapons in the game will offer alternates fire modes, such as pistols that switch between bullets and micro-missiles.

The movement system has been given an overhaul in Borderlands 3, with players being able to slide and mantle up ledges. Also arriving is a new instancing system where players will always encounter enemies and loot that are tailored to their level, regardless of their co-op partner levels. So even someone playing an under-leveled character can deal their fair share of damage and take home loot they can use right away.

This instancing system is optional, however, so those wanting the original games" experience can enable "Classic Mode" when playing Borderlands 3. Some quality of life improvements such as a refill all ammo button, and a lost and found machine that gives back players any guns they may have lost along the way were also shown off.

Sanctuary is back as a home hub for players that is now customizable. However, it is now also a space ship that players can use to travel to different planets beyond Pandora"s system. This is also where players will meet many of the returning characters from previous titles like Moxxi, Hammerlock, and Crazy Earl.

Gearbox confirmed offline play for the cooperative shooter, and added microtransactions will be limited to cosmetic items much like with previous titles. There are campaign DLCs planned that will arrive as post-launch content.

Borderlands 3 is slated to launch on September 13 for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The PC version is exclusive to the Epic Games Store, with other storefronts set to receive the game six months later.
