The 2K Games-published first-person RPG Borderlands 3 has managed to break records with its impressive sales performance in the first week of release. The publisher announced today that Borderlands 3 sold over five million copies just in the first five days after launch across PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, making it the fastest-selling title in 2K"s history.
Compared to Borderlands 2"s launch numbers, over 50% more people have purchased Borderlands 3, breaking pre-order records. Digital sales were strong in particular, with over 70% of the launch sales coming from that front, the highest percentage of digital sales 2K has achieved for a "cross-platform, cross-distribution title."
Though no numbers were shared, the Epic Games Store exclusive PC version was specifically mentioned for showing "incredibly strong" sales, which had also broken pre-order records on the store. With this, Borderlands 3 has become the highest-selling 2K-published game on PC "in a five-day window." Gearbox"s Randy Pitchford recently revealed that Borderlands 3 concurrent player numbers at launch on PC almost doubled the all-time high peak of Borderlands 2.
2K president David Ismailer said the following regarding the highly successful launch, thanking Gearbox Software and the community:
“Borderlands 3’s incredibly successful launch is a result of the hard work and longstanding partnership between Gearbox Software and 2K. We are immensely grateful to everyone who played a role in making the Borderlands series the global, pop culture phenomenon that it is today, including hundreds of developers at Gearbox and many who have made this their life’s work. We also want to thank the Borderlands community. Mayhem does not happen by itself, and their passion for the series is what drives us to make each game an amazing experience.”
Borderlands 3 is now available for purchase on PC via Epic Games Store, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. A Google Stadia release is planned for November, while those looking forward to a Steam launch will have to wait at least until April 2020.
