Alaska Airlines has announced that it will be introducing Windows tablets on some of its flights, providing access to music, games and videos on longer-distance journeys. From February 1, the new "Inflight Entertainment tablets powered by Microsoft" will be available on board the carrier"s long-haul flights.
Passengers in First Class - as well as top-tier frequent flyers - will be able to enjoy the tablets free of charge. All other passengers will be asked to pay between $8 and $10 to rent the tablet for the duration of the flight.
The tablets will provide access to movies, TV shows, music and magazines, as well as internet access, where available. The devices also come pre-loaded with various Xbox games for Windows, including Microsoft Sudoku, Solitaire Collection and Mahjong.
Passengers can also use their own devices to access the onboard entertainment service, which should be available across almost the entire Alaska Airlines fleet in the next couple of months. Until March 31, all content will be available at no cost - both for passengers renting tablets or bringing their own; after that date, some content will still be free, but prices will start at $1.99 for "premium movies and TV shows".
