A few weeks ago, Microsoft rolled out the first preview of its lightweight operating system for small, ultra-low-cost connected devices. Windows 10 IoT Core, as its name suggests, is designed for the Internet of Things, and it looks like it will soon face competition in that segment from Google.
As The Information reports, Google is developing its own streamlined operating system for IoT devices, called Brillo, and it"s expected to make its debut at the company"s I/O developer conference this month.
Like similar IoT operating systems, Brillo will be optimized for devices with extremely limited hardware resources, and particularly those with low RAM.
At this stage, little is known about Brillo, but it"s understood to have been developed as an entirely separate effort from Nest, the connected home platform that Google acquired last year, although it is likely to offer some level of compatibility with Nest.
But while there are currently few details about Brillo, with I/O set to kick off on May 28, at least there isn"t too long to wait until we find out more about what Google has in store for the Internet of Things. The company is also expected to announce the next major update to its Android OS at the conference next week.
