Activision looks like it has a new and major online service on its hands. Today the publisher announced that it has registered over 1 million premium subscribers for its Call of Duty Elite stats and community service in its first six days since its launch on November 8. The premium version of the service cost $49.95 for a year for Xbox 360 and PS3 owners of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3.
Activision points out that it took a number of other popular online services a year to reach the one million paid subscriber mark, including Netflix, Microsoft"s Xbox Live, and Hulu Plus. Activision says that a total of 4 million people have registered for Call of Duty Elite, which provides detailed multiplayer stats and other content for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 players.
As we have reported before, the service has also had to deal with a lot of post-launch issues due in part to the massive amount of people who were signing onto Call of Duty Elite. In today"s press release, Activision Publishing"s CEO Eric Hirshberg admitted to the service"s post-release problems but added, "I"m very pleased to announce today that the service is now performing stably and anyone who wants to try Call of Duty Elite is now able to do so." PC players of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 will be able to access their own version of Call of Duty Elite in the near future but it will be a free service only without access to some of the features that will be available to the premium Xbox 360 and PS3 owners.
