A few weeks ago, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer claimed that sales of Windows Phone devices had gone up by four times the amount sold in 2011 following the launch in November of Windows Phone 8. However, he declined to give any specific sales numbers. Now, there are indications that Ballmer may actually know what he was talking about.
WMPoweruser.com reports they have collected information on the number of unique users of the Facebook app made for Windows Phone. In the fourth quarter of 2011, the report says there was less than 150,000 unique active Windows Phone users on Facebook. That has changed to around 627,000 unique Facebook users for Windows Phone for the fourth quarter of 2012.
What does this mean? While the number of Windows Phone users that use Facebook is certainly tiny compared to other platforms like the PC, iOS and Android, these numbers do seem to suggest that Windows Phone ownership has grown by the amount that Ballmer said in late November.
The article also points out that the research firm Gartner said back in the fourth quarter of 2011, 2.759 million Windows Phone devices had sold worldwide. If Ballmer"s statements, combined with Facebook"s numbers, turn out to be correct, we could see as many as 10 million Windows Phone smartphones sold in the fourth quarter of 2012.
