Several months after the release of Ubuntu 18.04, Canonical has pushed the first point release. Point releases are convenient if you’re downloading the Ubuntu ISO for a clean install because updates to this point are rolled into the disc image. This announcement is also notable because if you’re still running Ubuntu 16.04, you’ll finally be prompted to upgrade your installation, now that things have had time to settle and become more stable.
Discussing the upgrade availability for 16.04 users, Canonical’s Desktop Engineering Manager, Will Cooke, said:
“The first point release for an LTS comes out three months after release, and is also the time at which we enable upgrades from the previous LTS release. That is to say, if you’re running 16.04 LTS then you will be prompted to upgrade to 18.04 LTS from today onwards (there is a little lag between the ISOs being made available and the upgrades being enabled). The three month period provides us the opportunity to find and fix critical bugs before enabling upgrades for our LTS users who, by nature, expect a very reliable base OS.”
If you’ve already got Ubuntu 18.04 installed, all you need to do is apply any available updates to jump to 18.04.1. There are no major changes in this point release but its bundled updates should make your system more stable than it was upon the release of 18.04 back in April.

Let us know in the comments if you’re running Ubuntu 16.04 and whether or not you’re now going to do the upgrade to 18.04.1.
