Studio acquisitions by major companies aren"t uncommon nowadays, and the latest one is coming in from CD Projekt, the brains behind The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077. Joining the group is The Molasses Flood, a Boston-based indie studio founded in 2014. The team involved is made up of ex-Halo, Bioshock, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band series veterans.
The Molasses Flood has previously launched the post-apocalyptic roguelike The Flame in the Flood in 2017, which was followed by the base building and survival game Drake Hollow in 2020.
"We’re always on the lookout for teams who make games with heart," CD Projekt president and joint CEO Adam Kiciński says. “The Molasses Flood share our passion for video game development, they’re experienced, quality-oriented, and have great technological insight. I’m convinced they will bring a lot of talent and determination to the Group."
"When CD PROJEKT approached us about the possibility of working together, we saw an incredible opportunity to reach a much wider audience through a collaboration with a company we love, creating games in worlds we love," The Molasses Flood studio head Forrest Dowling adds. "We could not be more excited to continue our mission with the support of CD PROJEKT and their incredibly talented team."
The Molasses Flood will work with CD Projekt but won"t be merged with an existing development team at the company. Also, while details were not shared today, the new studio will be working on a new "ambitious project" utilizing one of CD Projekt"s existing IPs. This almost certainly means a game set in The Witcher or Cyberpunk 2077 universes, perhaps a spin-off like Thronebreaker.
