Chinese upgrade version of Windows 8 to be discounted to $49 for limited time

Microsoft has some very good news for its Chinese customers, as the company will be massively discounting its Windows 8 price in the coming days, a few months before Windows XP finally stops being supported.

WPDang reports that the company is getting ready to cut its retail price for Windows 8 from the usual 988 yuan to only 299 yuan, the equivalent of $49. The discount is supposed to begin on the 11th of November at midnight and last through to the 24th with users being able to upgrade their devices through the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant. After upgrading folks will also be able to get Windows 8.1 through the Store.

China is one of the biggest markets on the planet. It’s also a place where piracy runs rampant and where most PCs are stuck on illegitimate copies of Windows XP. So it’s no wonder that with only a few months left before XP officially becomes obsolete, Microsoft is trying to reach out to potential customers and give them an easy and cheap way to not only upgrade to the latest OS but also use certified non-pirated software. The company has actually stated that its goal is to bring XP marketshare below 13 percent by April 2014.

We’ll have to wait and see if the company’s efforts pan out or if consumers still prefer the 12-year old XP operating system.

Thanks to our readers for the tip!
