In 2010, Cisco announced plans to release the Cisco Cius, an Android-based tablet designed primarily for the business and enterprise markets. At the time, a Cisco representative said that while the tablet had been in development for some time, it was accelerated after Apple launched the first version of the iPad.
Now it looks like the Cius" day is done. In a blog post on Friday, Cisco said:
Cisco will no longer invest in the Cisco Cius tablet form factor, and no further enhancements will be made to the current Cius endpoint beyond what’s available today. However, as we evaluate the market further, we will continue to offer Cius in a limited fashion to customers with specific needs or use cases.
The company said that it will now "double down" on offering a number of software products for both tablets and smartphones, including Cisco Jabber and Cisco WebEx. The company never offered up any sales figures for the Cius, although we assume they were pretty bad if they are no longer going to actively support the product.
The tablet was one of the few that had a processor by Intel. It had a Intel Atom 1.6 GHz chip inside. The seven inch tablet had Android 2.2, along with both WiFi and 4G wireless connections, and a number of ports such as USB, MicroSD, and HDMI.
